Introduction

One of the most attractive qualities of American red oak is its versatility when it comes to market applications. Its mechanical properties and characteristics make it suitable and workable for most commercial end uses. Its availability ensures continuity of supply in a wide selection of grades at price levels to suit many different applications.

Furniture and Cabinetry

Ideal for all types of furniture production and cabinet work. Strong and stiff and hard wearing but not too heavy and relatively easy to process compared to some other oak species. Its distinctive grain pattern and good finishing properties are ideal for producing either natural oiled appearances or stained finishes in a full range of colour tones. Red oak components can be solid, laminated or veneer wrapped and furniture manufactures worldwide use significant quantities of red oak lumber and veneer to great effect in their product ranges.

Flooring

Red oak flooring is revered for its pink hue and versatility. Its hard and heavy nature coupled with a high crushing strength and good shock resistance contributes to the species excellent wear resistance making it an ideal choice for both residential and commercial projects.

Solid red oak flooring can be easily re-sanded and re-finished which adds to its appeal and longevity.

Joinery

The wood is usually straight grained and so machines well despite its coarse texture. It takes nails and screws well but pre-boring is recommended. Red oak takes stain well and can be polished to a good finish. The timber is available in slightly longer lengths than is the average for other oak species. All these properties make it a highly desirable species for architectural joinery work.
